First Experiments
In January of 97 we were making drawings driving a car around Mexico City, trying to follow a path along the marking of some points in the GPS system. Drawing made by wandering through several Mexico city streets. Size: 8 Kilometers.

Tracking data with Garmin GPS 45XL in the Tequezquitengo Lake.

Drawing of Tequesquitengo Lake outline . Size: 5 Kilometers.
By the time we decided to make the first formal drawing in the Zona del Silencio (February 97) we were basically fully equipped in terms of hardware and software... and we choose this place because of its legendary phenomena (compass going crazy, killing of radio signals, etc.)....
At this time of the year, the desert is very dry and dusty... so our truck (not a four wheel drive) was able to go all the way up to the center of the "Zona".

The project was designed in stages, the first one being the drawings over Zona del Silencio on June 21, 1997. This date had two advantages: the longest day of the year (Summer's Solstice) and a full moon allowing a very good visibility in the desert. We conducted a previous visit to the Zona in order to evaluate the possibilities of this area for the first stage. The results showed that the technology used was trust worthy and can be used in any kind of geographical or climatic situation.
Above Jose Ferez is checking the compass, and we regret to say that it didn't go crazy...Here's an image of what you can actually see after you download the points marked with the GPS...

Zona del Silencio first test. February 1997. Longest size: 1.8 Kilometers.
This is the course (the drawing of it) from Mexico City to the Zona del Silencio: 1300 Kilometers long!
This section is untitled "Log Book"; but the actual Log Book is a Notebook and has been made by Andrea Di Castro; this is an example of it.... As you can see the primitive icons are very global ; so obviously since the beginning of time man has had the same interests all around the planet. A small world indeed...

This is the set-up of the GPS receiver inside the car: notice the antenna in the windshield, using a Garmin 12XL unit.
